"When I was a kid in the '60s, I used to sneak in up the back door and look through the crack in the door at The Renaissance in Hollywood to see him play," says Jim. "So I've seen him many, many times over the years and I've heard him on all kinds of records, but I never heard him play as good as he did that night that Charlie and I saw him subbing for Tony Williams at Catalina's...in his 73rd year, no less! I was floored, Charlie was floored. It was an amazing, amazing night. He's never really changed his thing but it's gotten better somehow. It's just always thrilling to see him play." |
