Red Hot + New Orleans
Trombone Shorty reigned as musical director of "Red Hot + New Orleans" at New York's Brooklyn Academy of Music on December 3 & 4, 2010 with guests appearances including Dr. John, Ledisi, Irma Thomas, Marc Broussard, Partners-N-Crime, Kermit Ruffins, Ivan Neville and more. Part of the proceeds benefited New Orleans' NO/AIDS Task Force.

Troy initiated a direct collaboration with then Louisiana Lieutenant Governor, now Mayor of New Orleans, Mitch Landrieu's Office to speak in schools about the importance of making the right choices growing up and how music has helped him stay focused. He also works with New Orleans' Roots of Music organization, whose stated goal is to assist the education system in providing a well rounded arts curriculum with academic support by providing music education in history, theory, instrumental instruction and ensemble performance.

In 2009, he was featured on the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival's annual Congo Square official poster.  At 23, he became the youngest artist ever to be pictured on the prestigious Jazz Fest poster - the next youngest was Wynton Marsalis, who was featured at age 41.

"Shorty possesses the rarest combination of talent, technical capability and down home soul.  I'm his biggest fan." - Wynton Marsalis

Trombone Shorty "flaunted the presence of a rock star...  He played trombone with almost combative postures." - Jon Pareles, New York Times

Troy was honored as Entertainer of the Year and won his 2nd Best Male Performer Award at the 2010 Big Easy Music Awards

Offbeat, New Orleans' premier music magazine, has awarded Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue Best R&B/Funk Band three times (2008, 2009 & 2011). Trombone Shorty himself has picked up three awards for Performer of The Year (2007, 2008 & 2011) and Best Trumpeter (2009 & 2010).

2010 and 2011 were breakout years for Trombone Shorty, but his story has been building for over two decades. New Orleans has watched his rise, from playing trumpet and trombone in a jazz band led by his older brother James when he was six, to his breakthrough in 2005 at age 19, when he toured the world as a member of Lenny Kravitz's band.  "Shorty's a genius," says Kravitz, "he plays his ass off and he's a beautiful human being."  The next year in 2006, Troy and other New Orleans stars performed together with U2 and Green Day, collaborating as one band, during the Louisiana Superdome's post-Hurricane Katrina re-opening spectacular.  Soon after, Troy's Christmas 2006 acting debut on NBC's series Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip (leading a group of New Orleans musicians in a performance of the holiday classic "O Holy Night") drew such an enthusiastic response from viewers that NBC released the single for free download on NBC.com.  Taking a break from the road in 2008, he performed at the NBA All-Star Game with Harry Connick Jr., Kermit Ruffins and Branford Marsalis.  It’s been a whirlwind ever since, as Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue have taken their patented Supafunkrock show to all corners of the globe, scoring raves everywhere - with much more to come.
