THE TOMMY CASTRO BAND - September

Tommy Castro just released his new CD, Painkiller, in January and also just won the poll for Blues Wax Artist of the Year Award. The CD was produced by John Porter, who has previously spearheaded projects with Santana, Los Lonely Boys, B.B. King, Elvis Costello and Keb’ Mo’. Painkiller is the follow up CD to Soul Shaker, which spent 19 weeks in the Billboard Blues Charts and was nominated for a Blues Music Award. The Tommy Castro Band will be touring worldwide in support of the new release.

THE DIRTY DOZEN BRASS BAND - July

On their new CD What’s Going On (Shout Factory/Evangeline) The Dirty Dozen Brass Band reinterpret and pay tribute to Marvin Gaye’s classic CD. Adding even more weight to the project is the fact that the political and social issues of that era remain relevant today - emphasized by the fact that the CD was released on the anniversary of the Katrina hurricane disaster. The Dozen themselves were uprooted by the hurricane and the loss they shared with much of the Gulf Coast community is given voice here by the band and special guests G. Love, Ivan Neville, Bettye LaVette, Guru and Chuck D. Known for their genre-bending romps and high-octane performances, the band has toured over 30 countries in 25 years and collaborated on record with everyone from Dizzy Gillespie to Elvis Costello, Norah Jones and Dave Matthews.

Ruthie Foster - July

The Texas singer/songwriter’s blend of gospel, blues, folk and soul has drawn comparisons to Aretha Franklin and Ella Fitzgerald as well as Tracy Chapman and Joan Armatrading. Her new album, The Phenomenal Ruthie Foster, was produced by Austin swamp guitarist Malcolm "Papa Mali" Welbourne and is out now on Blue Corn Music. “’Phenomenal’ is no idle boast” raved the Boston Herald, and according to the Washington Post Ruthie “demanded attention with the sheer power of her mezzo-soprano” at her performance at the 2007 South by Southwest Music Conference last March. Upcoming European performances include appearances at the Cognac Blues Passions in France and Cambridge Folk Festival in England with more extensive touring being planned worldwide.

JOHN HAMMOND - July

Grammy Award winning blues veteran, John Hammond, is just releasing his new CD, Push Comes To Shove, on Back Porch in Europe. Already out in the United States the CD was produced by G Love (Garret Dutton III), who counts Hammond as one of his own main musical influences. It features five John Hammond original compositions, a bold collaboration with Dutton in the hip hop-tinged blues of “Tore Down”, as well as a handful of personalized renderings of traditional blues numbers. Hammond gives major credit for the stellar sound and feel of the songs on the album to the musicians on the CD who also perform with him live when he is not performing solo. The band features Stephen Hodges on drums, Marty Ballou on bass and new addition Bruce Katz on piano and organ. A tireless live performer, watch for John to tour extensively worldwide in support of the new CD. He is available solo acoustic and as quartet electric.

Booker T. Jones just received a Lifetime Achievement Award for his work with seminal instrumental group, Booker T. & the MG's at the 2007 Grammy Awards ceremony. The group were million-sellers as one of the top instrumental outfits of the rock era with hits including "Green Onions," "Time Is Tight," and "Hang 'Em High." Booker T. & the MGs also backed recordings by such artists as Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Albert King, The Staple Singers, and Wilson Pickett and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992. Booker is currently working on his first recording of solo or MG's material since 1994, and 2007 tour dates in the US and Europe are planned for Booker’s own great new band.

After releasing the Joe Henry produced, critically acclaimed CD I’ve Got My Own Hell to Raise (Anti), Bettye LaVette has been knocking out audiences everywhere. 2006 European festival highlights included Rock Werchter in Belgium, North Sea Jazz Festival in The Netherlands, Jazz Fest Vienne in France, and Cambridge Folk Festival in England. She has appeared on European television shows such as Later with Jools Holland on the BBC, Album De La Semaine on the French Canal Plus, and the Dutch Barend Van Dorp Show. Critically acclaimed, the CD received 4 stars in The London Times, The Daily Mirror, The Guardian, and Time Out London, 4 1/2 stars in Uncut and Le Monde, and the French national newspaper Liberation raved. Coco Montoya uses blues as a blasting off point for his emotional, soulful music on his new Alligator CD, Dirty Deal. Little Feat members Paul Barerre, Kenny Gradney, Richie Hayward and Bill Payne guest. Produced by Barrere, Dirty Deal is Coco’s rawest, most stripped-down and impassioned recording to date. “Montoya is at the forefront of the contemporary blues world” according to Guitar World. After a chance meeting in the 1970’s with legendary blues man, Albert Collins, Coco Montoya was asked to join Collins’ band as their drummer. Collins eventually taught Montoya to play guitar and served as his mentor. Montoya then went on to play guitar for ten years with John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers. He will be touring worldwide in support of his new release.

THE DUKE ROBILLARD BAND - March, April 2008

Duke Robillard's guitar work has seamlessly spanned the worlds of jazz, blues, and swing since he founded the renowned big band, Roomful of Blues in 1967. Since 1980, Duke has recorded over a dozen acclaimed solo albums and his current release Guitar Groove-A-Rama (Stony Plain) garnered a 2007 Grammy nomination. Duke toured the US last year as the guitar player in Tom Waits’ band, and earlier in his career he was a member of The Fabulous Thunderbirds. A four-time Blues Music Award winner as Best Blues Guitarist, Duke was also honored by The Blues Foundation with a Keeping The Blues Alive Award for Best Producer last year for his work with Jay McShann, Jimmy Witherspoon, Billy Boy Arnold and Debbie Davies. He also had three consecutive wins as International Blues Artist of the Year in Canada’s Maple Blues awards from 2001-2003.

SIERRA LEONE'S REFUGEE ALL STARS - July

With a spirited and infectious fusion of traditional West African music and roots reggae, Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars craft music that transforms and uplifts. Their debut album Living Like A Refugee (Anti) decries the insanity of war and calls out for social justice while instantly compelling you to get on your feet and dance. The band’s song, “ Ankalah”, is featured in the Leonardo DiCaprio film Blood Diamond and in the film’s soundtrack CD. They also just recorded “Give Peace a Chance” with Aerosmith legends Steven Tyler and Joe Perry for an Amnesty Darfur compilation due out mid 2007 including other major artists covering John Lennon originals. Joe Perry also joined the band in studio to record a version of U2’s “Seconds” for inclusion on a benefit compilation due mid 2007 featuring African artists performing U2 songs. The band’s strong press includes reviews in The Times and The Independent of London, Newsweek who compared the band to Buena Vista Social Club, The New York Times and Los Angeles Times. Formed in a refugee camp in the West African nation of Guinea, the band is the subject of the award winning documentary film, Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars. The band recently appeared on television on the Oprah Winfrey Show, at The World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Transmusicales Festival in France, Fuji Rock Festival in Japan, East and West Coast Blues & Roots Festival in Australia and in the United States at Bonnaroo and New York’s Central Park Summerstage where they headlined.

MAVIS STAPLES - April, May 2008

Soul and gospel legend Mavis Staples recently completed work on her new CD, We'll Never Turn Back (Anti), produced by Ry Cooder and set for release April 24, 2007. Ry also plays on the record which features backing from the original Freedom Singers, Ladysmith Black Mambazo and others. The album combines raw, emotional, contemporized versions of some of the freedom songs that provided the soundtrack to the civil rights movement of the 1950s/60s, along with other traditional songs and new originals written by Mavis and Ry. Mavis Staples is a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee and Grammy Lifetime Achievement winner who, as lead singer in The Staple Singers, has been a driving force in music and social change since the group helped provide the spiritual soundtrack of the 1960's civil rights movement. The Staple Singers drew their inspiration from the church and like Martin Luther King, John Lewis and the other civil rights leaders, were a major voice in the civil rights movement. As lead singer of The Staple Singers she had eight Top 40 hits, including the two #1 singles “I'll Take You There” and “Let's Do It Again.”

The Weepies’ CD Say I Am You was just released on Nettwerk Records. Confident, lyrical and accessible, the new CD has the taste of a classic pop album with the wistful track "World Spins Madly On" included in the upcoming Jennifer Aniston film, Friends with Money. Already available online, the new CD reached #3 on the iTunes folk Chart in the US and has not left the Top 20 since its' Dec digital release. The CD has reached #1 on the iTunes folk chart in 8 countries: Canada, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Spain and Portugal. The live show is a mix of vocal harmonies, tasteful guitar work and engaging stage personalities.

The Weepies are the folk/pop duo of Deb Talan and Steve Tannen on Nettwerk Records. Their second album, Say I Am You, was released in 2006 and hit #1 on the iTunes folk album charts in nine countries including the USA, Canada, the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Spain and Portugal. They supported the Indigo Girls in the Fall in the US and their recent headline shows have been marked by advance sellouts in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Philadelphia and Boston.
