W. C. Handy Awards Honor Rosebud Artists

Congratulations to our W C Handy Award winners. Charlie Musselwhite won his umpteenth Handy as Best Instrumentalist, Harmonica while Duke Robillardscored his second consecutive win as Best Guitarist in the awards held in Memphis on May 24 and due to be telecast later this year. Ruth Brown made a rare appearance at the event to present one of the final awards along with Rufus Thomas.


The Blues Music Association Honors Rosebud Founder, Mike Kappus

Thanks to the Blues Music Association, who held an event May 25 in Memphis in conjunction with the W C Handy Awards. Rosebud founder, Mike Kappus, was honored at the event at B B King's club with the BMA's A. G. E. S. award. The award is given to an individual for helping improve the commercial success of blues music.


JJ Cale's first ever live CD coming soon, Cale cover in American Express TV ad

J J Cale's first ever live CD is being released June 5. The CD features all the most popular Cale classics recorded at shows from San Francisco's Great American Music Hall, to London's Hammersmith Apollo to the legendary Carnegie Hall among other venues. In the meantime, Eric Clapton's latest JJ Cale cover, "Travelin Light" is being used in Eric's current American Express ad. Clapton kicked off his solo career with Cale's "After Midnight", followed by a later smash with Cale's "Cocaine".

Billboard Magazine has recently done extensive features on several Rosebud artists. Marcia Ball and Robert Cray have been featured in major pieces in the past few weeks while John Hammond was featured in a Spotlight review of his new Tom Waits produced CD, Wicked Grin. The Blind Boys of Alabama were featured in two separate pieces as noted in last month's Rosebud news. John Hammond and Marcia Ball's new CDs are both featured in the top 5 of Billboard's Blues Charts while Robert Cray's Shoulda Been Home hits the streets May 15.
